Sunwest Cemetery in El Mirage was founded in 1889 as a small cemetery to inter the victims of the smallpox pandemic that claimed the lives of 48 residents. The Sunwest Cemetery gradually grew as the population increased, prompting the purchase of more land in 1926 north of the brown road.
