Valley of the Sun Mortuary & Cemetery in Chandler was founded in 1885 as a small cemetery to inter the victims of the smallpox pandemic that claimed the lives of 42 residents. The Valley of the Sun Mortuary & Cemetery gradually grew as the population increased, prompting the purchase of more land in 1918 north of the brown road.
